Smoked Pork Feet, anybody?

So this is what it looks like after a few days of *getting better*!!

For the record, when it begins - Every metatarsal bone starts twinging like its being low-broiled in some Southern Pork dish - after that it subsides.    For months.    And months.

Not that lucky this time.

I'd put a lot of stress on the old POS ankle a few weeks ago searching for a missing relative up in the hard scrabble foothills for nearly 4 hours.    Professor Ankle did not take kindly to the non-sedative tasks required.

Coupla days later he started to complain - as often happens when over tasked with his usual over-perfunctory duties .  A few days later, I knew he was seriously pissed.

The Movers/Loaders arrive tomorrow at 8 AM(!).    Prof. Ankle still hasn't returned to his crypt.

We'll be in touch soon,
Jonathon Harker

Jack Unruh

I realize it may seem this blog is becoming more of a Fan Boy site rather than a place to show my own wirk.   BUT....I have to do a virtual shout out to a guy I have admired (and occasionally stolen from) for many years.   JACK UNRUH!   I've always loved the way he combines minimalist illustration technique with strong graphic design.   Neither takes precedent over the other.   And his character illos are just as strong as his Nature illos.   Just....holy crap!!

Check out the awesomeness here.

Ilya Repin

Super badass artist that I just found out about today.

Ilya Yefimovich Repin (5 August [O.S. 24 July] 1844 – 29 September 1930) was a Russian realist painter. He was the most renowned Russian artist of the 19th century, when his position in the world of art was comparable to that of Leo Tolstoy in literature. He played a major role in bringing Russian art into the mainstream of European culture. His major works include Barge Haulers on the Volga (1873), Religious Procession in Kursk Province (1883) and Reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks (1880–91).

George Dawe

George Dawe (6 February 1781, St James's, Westminster – 15 October 1829, Kentish Town) was an English portraitist who painted 329 portraits of Russian generals active during Napoleon's invasion of Russia for the Military Gallery of the Winter Palace. He relocated to Saint Petersburg in 1819, where he won acclaim for his work from the artistic establishment and complimentary verses by Pushkin.

Maneki Neko definitions

Maneki-neko can be found with either the right or left paw raised (and sometimes both). The significance of the right and left raised paw differs with time and place. A common belief is that the left paw raised brings in customers, while a right paw brings good luck and wealth, although some believe the opposite, or that one paw is for luck and the other for wealth. Another interpretation says that a raised left paw attracts money, while a raised right paw protects it. Still others say that a left paw raised is best for drinking establishments, the right paw for other stores (those who hold their liquor well are called "left-handed" (hidari-kiki) in Japanese). Yet another interpretation is that right is for home and left for business.

It is commonly believed the higher the raised paw, the greater the luck. Consequently, over the years maneki-neko's paw has tended to appear ever higher. Some use the paw height as a crude method of gauging the relative age of a figure. Another common belief is that the higher the paw, the greater the distance good fortune will come from.

Yogi's First Xmas

"Yogi's First Christmas"

"The artwork is by Sylvia and Burnett Mattinson and the story by Stuart Quentin Hyatt. There was a Burnett Mattinson who played with the American Institute Symphony in the mid-20s and drummed in the Horace Heidt band in the ‘40s. He was found dead, under suspicious circumstances, in his Sherman Oaks, California home in 1970. "

Old Skool Animators

Daly notes a difference in the way they (traditional 2D animators) animate compared to those trained only in 3D. She says, “I think often times, 2D people come from a deep art background. So what we’re seeing is that there’s a different level of artistry in their animation once they master 3D. Not to say that people who have been 3D animators are inferior, but the 2D animators are able to translate their art really effectively in a 3D medium in a way that, generally speaking, a lot of people didn’t think they’d be able to.”

Animator and director Don Bluth (Titan A.E., Anastasia) echoes Daly’s statement. Don Bluth Films most recently made its first venture into 3D with cinematics for the Namco video game I-Ninja. He says of 2D animators, “They understand the principles of animation better than anyone. When we were doing I-Ninja, there was one guy among all the animators, an older guy who had done 2D his whole life long. It’s the difference between night and day when you see what he animates compared to the other guys who have never really drawn with a pencil. His animation is very spicy, very alive.”
